4.1.09- Meretz’s Executive board
Israel

Regarding the fighting in the Gaza strip, Meretz’s executive board decisions are as follows:
- Meretz’s executive board calls for an immediate ceasefire, through the help of International initiatives, direct talks, or even by a unilateral decision for limited time ceasefire. A long term agreement must assure peace in the south part of the state of Israel, a quick ending of the negotiation of the release of the MIA IDF solider Gilad Shalit, and opening the passage ways to and from the Gaza strip.
- Meretz’s executive board warns from proceeding with the military action and particularly a ground invasion, which this time will lead to sinking in the swampy mud of Gaza.
- Meretz’s executive board condemns the continuation of injuries upon the citizens of the state of Israel by Hamas and other terror organizations and supports the right and the obligation of the state of Israel to defend its citizens.
- Meretz’s executive board condemns the killing of innocents Palestinians. An action to prevent terror against the residents in the vicinity of Gaza does not justify the harm of innocent ones.
- There is not and could not be a military solution for stopping the terror. Even at this time, perhaps with greater vigor, we must proceed and promote, in any way, a political agreement between the state of Israel and the Palestinian authority in the spirit of the latest peace initiative by Saudi Arabia.
- Meretz’s executive board stands with the Israeli citizens who live in the south part of Israel and press for the Israeli government to act as soon as possible in order to ease their pain and suffering during this time.
- Meretz’s executive board severely condemns the voices who call for hindering the rights of the Israeli Arabs while they express their thoughts about the Gaza military operation. It is their full right to express their opinion as long as it is not lawbreaking.
